Adapting the possible strategies on designing multi-generational housing

Overall Space Planning (Exterior)

- separated wisely into public zone, semi-public zone and private zone
- developed common space in the central of independence living unit
- the common space works as a nucleus within the living area as the main element to strengthen the family bonding.
- case study of traditional Chinese courtyard house, whereby it enhancing independent living with privacy whilst emphasizing family togetherness.
- courtyard being designed in the middle of the housing area. Open area.
- independent living unit connected by corridor which is semi-public area and can access to both courtyard and the rooms.

Layout Design (Interior)

- divided the area and services targeted to different users experience such as elder generations and younger generations.
- dual-key concept.
- studio unit design suitable for youngsters who required more privacy and freedom.
- studio unit which serves only one or two bedrooms with co-working space, small kitchen and separate bathroom.
- duplex owned by the elder family members.
- can integrate universal design into the space facilities such as bathroom and staircase, wheelchair pathway.
- taking care of the younger generations besides giving them freedom and chance to live independently.
- accompany the elder parents for family time especially during dinner time.

Accessibility

- proximity to friends and family
- shared unit encouraging interaction and communication between neighbours
- easy accessible by public transport to widen the navigation of space by the elders.
- accessible to reach users from the same age group, developing friendship and companionship.
- lifestyle of Malay kampong.
- In Islam teachings, the word 'jiran' which means neighbors are the people who lived 40km in radius around their current living area.
- Create strong bonding, helping each other especially during festive season.
- frequently pay a visit to neighbor's house at least once a day.
- shorten the distance between neighbourhood.
- carry out common activities which enable human interaction and communication.
- rear gardens
- driveways

Greenery and Landscape Design

- recreation park and sport facilities
- suitable for elder parents to develop a healthy lifestyle.
- balconies and courtyard as private refuge.

Facilities and Amenities / Healthcare and Wellness

- childcare and senior centers.
- healthcare services: health check, first aid and emergency
- The Green Leaf of Retirement, Sepang.
- children playground
- develop the interests for both children and senior citizens.
- friendship between the people from same age group.

Multi-functional Solutions

- flexible spaces can be redefine using dividers or sliding door.
- granny flat
- multi-functional storage. storage underneath seating.
- transformation of space from children playhouse into communal space between elders.

- quick storage of toys from the children.
